Michele Scarponi performed an outstanding 15th stage of Giro d’Italia, the Conegliano-Gardeccia, obtaining the 4th place in the race classification and the 2nd position in the overall standing.
The stage was won by Nieve, who attacked from very far and he could reach the arrival with 1’41″ on Garzelli (former breakaway mate), 1’51″ on Contador and 1’57″ on Scarponi.
Nibali and Anton were in late, so Scarponi is 2nd in the overall standing at 4’20″ to Contador and with 51″ on Nibali.
“I’m satisfied, this was a good day for me – Scarponi said – I think that this was a very tough stage but I faced it pedaling with regularity and this was the best choice that allowed me to be competitive in each moment of the race. Now I’m second in the overall standing, but I know that there will be a last week of Giro that will be tough. I’m sorry that my team mate Marzano had to quit the race because of temperature: he was very important for me and I want to thank him for what he has done until now”.
